Rowan County has a variety of institutions for you to pick from to further your education.  You will see the offerings in internships, GED certifications, skill certifications, pre-college, pre-professional, two year degrees, four year degrees, graduate (Master's) degrees and continuing education programs. The higher level of education you receive, the higher chance of receiving more income. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Associate Degree holders earn almost $8000 more per year than high school diploma holders and have 30 percent lower unemployment rates.

1- Catawba College

Catawba offers over 40 academic fields of undergraduate study in a residential setting with 20 concentrations as well as pre-professional preparation, adult evening and Graduate Studies. They also offer internship through Career Services and interdisciplinary study opportunities.

The Division of Business offers the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) The four departments in the Division of Education offers degrees in the following areas: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Elementary Education (K-6), Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Physical Education (K-12), Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Sport Management, Bachelor of Social Work (B.SW.) in Social Work and Bachelor of Psychology (B.S). The Division of Liberal Arts offers programs in: Criminal Justice, English Liberal Arts, History, Music Liberal Arts, Music Education, Political Science , Religious Studies, Sociology and Theater Arts.  The Division of Mathematics and Sciences seeks to prepare students for careers as mathematicians, teachers, beginning biologists, technicians, chemists, and engineers with the goal of a Bachelor of Science (B.S.)  

The Evening Undergraduate Program for adults offers degrees in Birth- Kindergarten Education, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Elementary Education and Religious Studies.

 

3- Hood Theological Seminary

 The Seminary offers three graduate degree programs with a two-year timeline. One of them is directed toward practice in the ordained ministry of word, sacraments and order. Another provides flexible theological education for purposes other than the ordained ministry and the third provides preparation for the attainment of the highest degree in the practice of ministry. The Seminary also offers a diploma program in Christian ministry for pastors and lay-persons who may or may not have the requirements for matriculation in the degree programs. Each of these programs accentuates a ministry to the total person and seeks to foster a dynamic relationship among the many disciplines and competencies which undergird effective Christian ministry.

4- Rowan Cabarrus Community College 

 

Pre-college studies provides instruction for students requiring basic skills education, GED preparation, English as a second language support and education for the intellectually disabled. 

Early College

Rowan-Cabarrus high school programs in collaboration with Kannapolis City Schools, Rowan-Salisbury School System, and Cabarrus County Schools provides several opportunities for high school students to get ahead by studying at the college level, including Huskins bill classes, dual enrollment and early college.

Two Year Associate Degrees

Associate degrees in applied science programs include these areas of business, health, public services and technical programs; Health and Public Services Technologies, Cosmetology, Industrial and Engineering Technologies, Liberal Arts, Business Technologies and General Education, Science, Biotechnology, Mathematics and Information Technologies. Some of the AAS programs have established articulation agreements with private and public universities which accept some courses toward an undergraduate degree.

Distance education makes it possible for students to learn on a more flexible schedule via telecourses, interactive television, internet, hybrid and web-enhanced courses

 

5- Pfeiffer University

Pfeiffer University is a traditional and residential college which offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Sciences four year degrees at the Misenheimer campus. Bachelor's degrees are offered for adult students at the Charlotte campus and the Master's degree program is offered at the Charlotte and Raleigh campuses.

Government Internships

North Carolina State Government Internship Program

The State Government Internship Program (SGIP), established in 1970, offers paid summer internship opportunities in 29 state government Departments to college, community college, graduate and law students who are permanent residents of the State. The Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office an advocacy agency within the North Carolina Department of Administration, coordinates the program.

Examples of internships include positions with the Governor's Policy and Press Offices, interns for the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, Legislative Research Assistants, various positions with state museums, aquariums, hospitals and prisons, a Legislative Assistant with the Governor's Washington, D.C. office, and several others from the coast to the mountains. The SGIP provides opportunities for most academic majors.

 

NC Volunteerism

The Governor's Page Program, a year-round program established in 1973, provides an opportunity for high school students, including those who may be home-schooled, to spend a week in Raleigh and learn about the roles and functions of state government. Each week, Pages are assigned to a cabinet level agency or Council of State office within the state government complex to assist employees with various tasks. In addition to their daily responsibilities, Pages will have the opportunity to meet the Governor, attend press conferences, participate in service projects, and tour historic landmarks (including the State Capitol, Legislative Building, Executive Mansion, and Supreme Court).
